Trinseo ABS grades given FDA approval

Three products in the Magnum range of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins have been approved for use in food contact application by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Qualification was given via the FDA’s Food Contact Notification (FCN) programme, with a decision promulgated on 18 April.

Magnum manufacturer Trinseo notes the FCN approval cover use in kitchen appliances, utensils and food packaging for frozen storage or at room temperatures.

The three products are:

  • Magnum ABS 3453
  • Magnum ABS 3904/3904 Smooth
  • Magnum ABS 8391/8391 MED.

Trinseo ABS products are already differentiated from its competitors because they are made using a proprietary mass polymerisation process – rather than the industry-standard emulsion techniques.

The FDA ruling will also aid Trinseo in selling the ABS resins to customers in the medical device segment, who frequently demand such qualifications.
