It confirms it has now installed the necessary equipment to begin volume recovery and cleaning of used PET food packs for processing into a next generation of containers. This step leverages a regulatory approval for the process, developed by the company granted by the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) in July 2014.
Without sanction from Efsa, such packaging is prohibited by EU Regulation 282/2008 on recycled food contact materials.
Another process for cleaning and recasting PET beverage bottles has been developed by Krones and was approved by Efsa for two third-party production sites in November 2014.
