Atlanta-based packaging and supply chain company Tosca has introduced new secondary packaging for the transport and sale of eggs.

It is a reusable plastic crate designed to hold egg cartons and incorporating a SmartWall design. Tosca says that the SmartWall containers allow eggs to naturally cool 10 times faster than when they are packed in corrugated cardboard. Rapid chilling can have a beneficial effect, reducing carbon dioxide release and the loss of moisture. Both of these factors reduce the useful shelf life of the eggs and can impact their final taste.

Tosca president Eric Frank says: 'Our new egg container is evidence that we continue to develop smarter solutions that drive customer value. We are extremely pleased that the feedback we have received indicates it is superior in design to anything currently available.'

The improved cooling in SmartWall crates has been validated by a study carried out by SensiTech, at a facility in Kansas run by Cal-Maine - the largest US producer of fresh eggs.

Tosca's container is designed to function as retail-ready packaging, to enable rapid restocking and reuse when cartons reach supermarket shelves.
