Peter Oldring from Valspar Europe discusses the hot topic of non-harmonised EU regulations

With the complexities of global harmonisation in food contact materials (FCM) becoming one of the primary obstacles in the food contact industry, we spoke to Peter Oldring ahead of his presentation at Global Food Contact in Rome to hear why it's so important to attend.

Smither Pira: Why do you think it is important to attend the Global Food Contact conference in May?

Peter Oldring: This will give an overview of the complexity of dealing with food contact compliance when your business covers different geographic regions and everyone has different requirements. The result is a more restrictive set of rules requiring compliance to numerous national regulations.

Smither Pira: What do you feel will be the most exciting developments in the Global Food Contact landscape in the next 5 years?

Peter Oldring: Probably the most exciting development will be how the EU approaches rationalising and harmonising FCM, particularly for the non-harmonised sectors. This is a major initiative from DGSante and the outcome will impact all, whether European or global.

Smither Pira: What are the main challenges the GFC industry is facing and how do you think this conference can address them?

Peter Oldring: Awareness that there are different rules in different regions. Proposals for how the best of each regions rules could be used to universally demonstrate safety / compliance of FCMs.

Smither Pira: What are you most looking forward to hearing at the Global Food Contact EU conference in Rome?

Peter Oldring: Understanding how some of the regions which have little or no FCM legislation are intending to progress.

Smither Pira: Why should delegates attend the Global Food Contact conference and what are the top three over riding takeaways they will receive?

Peter Oldring: Appreciation that although FCM may be a global business, the rules in different regions are different. The main take aways will be how to tackle demonstration of safety of FCMs to the brand owners which can be accepted globally.

Peter Oldring: How national legislation in EU can be used to fill the gap left by lack of EU harmonised legislation
